The Cinematic Skies of Robbie Muller and Wim Wenders: Until the End of the World
Robbie Muller and Wim Wenders shot 12 movies together, including the Road Trilogy (Alice in the Cities, The Wrong Move, and Kings of the Road) Paris, Texas, An American Friend, and, of course Until the End of the World. Muller is well known for his use of natural light. One of my favorite aspects of their collaboration is the way they shoot the sky. Their sky compositions are a perfect example of the collaboration between cinematographer and director. The infinite shades of blue (or black); the blocking of subjects and objects; the framing and composition; and the color of costumes, props, and locations all combine to create the sense of magic and possibility we associate with so many of their partnerships.
